ABOUT Ian Adams

Ian Intern_edited.jpg

Difficulties are abundant in our world. Our very place in it can be mystifying and confusing, leaving us with questions like Why Me? or What do I do?
I am not a person that answers these questions for you, but a person that believes everyone in the world has the power to find their own answers and confidently lead a life worth living with the proper support. In a world that is quick to judge and label people, I find fulfilment in understanding a person wholly, in context of their world but also in context of our own relationship. I will walk alongside you as a journeyman, supporting you on your path to self-discovery.

My journey in becoming a therapist began during my undergraduate studies at Iowa State University, where I obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology with a minor in Philosophy. Since then, I completed my studies at Drake University, obtaining a Master of Science degree in clinical Mental Health Counseling. As of now, I hold a Temporary License as a Mental Health Counselor (tLMHC). I take great pride in being a part of the Healing Ways Counseling team, working alongside Jeanne and Rich.

My approach to counseling is rooted in client-centered and Existential Psychotherapy, seeking to help individuals find reasons to live happily despite life's challenges. I also have a keen interest in exploring how Existentialism intersects with therapeutic modalities such as Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Internal Family Systems (IFS, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). Additionally, I take seriously the importance of accounting for the impact of material conditions on our mental health.

Beyond counseling, I cherish spending time with my family and our beloved dogs, Pippin (Husky) and Bunny (Shiba Inu). I am actively involved in community art events and music festivals, and find joy in reading philosophy, engaging in hobbies and games with friends, and bass fishing at Saylorville Lake.

If you're seeking a therapist who is nonjudgmental and will support you in navigating life's challenges and discovering your own answers, I invite you to join me on this transformative journey. Together, we can work to discover ourselves and work towards a life filled with meaning and fulfillment.
